An anon requested an "unconventional" set of tags for the tag game going around (where people reblog and write in the words and click whatever tag shows up first). So here’s some ones that I don’t think I’ve seen around before!

as street photographers we see it all. we see the staggering drunks, the pretty girls made up and walking fast toward the night. the rich, poor and the ones muddling through the middles of everything. we get into the cracks and we’re always watching everything. then we come home and share what we find. and sometimes, probably more often than not, we also share our war stories. our stories of the angry young men who threaten to smash our cameras. of power drunk security guards trying to throw us out of places everyone else is freely allowed to be. the disapproving looks from mothers. the watchful eyes of fathers. the snarls of boyfriends. the laughter of the new elite was they walk down stephen avenue mall in their oh-so-expensive suit costumes.

we take some flak to bring this stuff back to you. and if you get enough of it in a short period you get blind to all the little bits of magic that happen.

much like the above. tyler and i were rolling through tweaker central (7th ave by the tim hortons) and both spotted this little old guy who apparently appealed to both our eyes. we started shooting him, doing that sort of bob and weave two street photographers do when they both target a subject and want the best line of sight. i dropped back and he started posing for tyler.

then, took his camera, and without any words, gestured he wanted to take a picture back. this is fair trade on the street. then gave ty the camera and wanted some shots of himself (take that craigslist, he just hired a photographer for nothing and didn’t even have to advertise).

meanwhile some kid picked up on what was happening and popped in for a photobomb.

we all laughed and had some fun at the unexpected turn.

but it reminds you too, that it’s not always hostile. not everyone feels you’re taking from them. not everyone demands an explanation. some are just as curious as you are what the world looks like through their cameras.

i wondered after, if he used to be a photographer. maybe even a street photographer. did he go home to boxes of old prints and reminisce? did he maybe even go home and post to his tumblr?

that would be something.

we sometimes forget, online, and in the real world, everyone is someone, a fully realized unique individual with a past, for better or worse they carry with them everywhere we go, and while they may be context in a scene or a player in a shadow play the moment we encounter them, we need try to remember they are people first. they play, and love, and feel overwhelmed and we only share a few portions of a second with them. be that good or bad, its only the smallest moment.

we should be glad we get the good, the bad and all the muddled grey stuff that happens between them. we should be glad we get anything at all.
